Performance built on experience
The DSPEC 50 and DSPEC 502 were developed to celebrate ORTEC's 50th anniversary, which has provided innovative and high-quality nuclear instruments to scientists in a range of application fields. Fifteen years after the first ORTEC DSPEC® digital spectrometer gained popularity among spectrometers for its performance and stability, the new DSPEC 50 and DSPEC 502 mark a milestone that brings together our extensive design experience in the field of digital spectrometers and the continuous innovation capabilities of our developers.
In addition to the standard models, the DSPEC 50 and DSPEC 502 are also available in newer premium versions. Both versions feature the same digital signal processing technology and stability, delivering unparalleled energy spectrum performance. The advanced version also includes optimized time characteristics consistent applications, such as anti-Compton spectrometer systems, anti-cosmic ray systems, etc. Web service interface that can run and extend applications independently of the operating system.

- "No loss" or "zero dead time" (ZDT)
A common method used to calculate count loss at high rates is to extend the acquisition time. The basic assumption is that the sample count rate does not change throughout the counting period. This assumption does not hold true when short half-lives are encountered or when the sample is in motion (e.g., flowing through a pipe). ORTEC has pioneered lossless counting technology in the digital realm. In this method, the spectrum itself is corrected on a pulse-by-pulse basis. The ZDT method also provides accurately corrected spectra and correctly calculated statistical uncertainties. - "Enhanced Pass Rate" mode
Accuracy at high input count rates may be limited by the speed at which the spectrometer can store data into memory. This is called "throughput limit". Pulse stacking means that beyond a certain point, the rate of data stored to memory decreases as the input count rate further increases, thus degrading the quality of the results.ORTEC increased throughput by 30% by developing a new digital peak detection algorithm that eliminates some of the dead time associated with the pulse peak amplitude determination process.
- list mode
For cases where the sample is moving relative to the detector, it is often necessary to measure the activity curve as a function of time. Examples of such applications include aerial surveying, land patrol surveying, and access control surveying. Usually it is required not to appear with "collection- "Dead zone" related to the "Store-Clear-Start" cycle. In list operation mode, data is streamed directly to the computer event by event. There is no relevant "dead zone". In DSPEC 50, each event is time stamped to an accuracy of 200nS. - Ballistic loss and charge capture correction
The ladder digital filter in the DSPEC 50 is the same as in all other ORTEC DSPEC series products. It adjusts the filter to optimize the resolution performance of large HPGe detectors, which often suffer from low-energy peak tailing when ballistic deficits are present. These large detectors are increasingly used in low activity counting applications. Adjustments are primarily automated using the Optimize feature and can also be monitored via the InSightTM virtual oscilloscope mode.
The DSPEC 50 offers additional functionality in the form of the Resolution Enhancer, a charge trap corrector that can be used to reduce peak resolution degradation in neutron damage detectors. Damage to the lattice by neutrons creates "trapped" centers that retain some of the charge created by gamma-ray interactions. This will result in a low-energy tail similar to a ballistic loss, albeit for a different reason. The charge trap corrector is calibrated or "trained" for each detector so that it can add back the pulse height deficit on an event-by-event basis.
- Low frequency noise suppression (LFR)
HPGeThe performance of the detector in environments with mechanical vibrations is not very ideal. Microphonic noise reduces energy resolution by adding low-frequency periodic electrical noise to the main signal. Ground loops are also a source of low-frequency electrical noise. more and moreHPGeThe detector is designed to eliminate pairs ofLN2demand for the use of mechanical coolers, and an increasing number ofHPGeThe detector is taken out of the laboratory environment, which means an increase in mechanical vibrations.DSPEC 50Has a low frequency noise suppressor (LFR) filtering function can reduce the impact of such noise sources.
DSPEC 50 display mode
The large color display can be used for initial setup of network connections. Provides the following multiple modes to display system status:
- Gauge mode
Gauge mode provides an easy-to-read display of system acquisition status using an analog dial. A green background means "counting". - big number mode
The large digital display mode uses large font digital display, allowing you to view the system operating status from a distance. - chart pattern
The chart continuously displays the count rate, dead time, and gain stability period during the data acquisition process to ensure that everything is normal. Gain stabilization is only displayed when the gain stabilization function is turned on. - Spectrum display mode
Spectrum display mode provides real-time acquisition of spectrum data display, and labels allROI. In addition, the net peak area of the ROI can be set for activity estimation via live time and a simple user-supplied conversion factor. Allows activity estimates to be displayed on the screen. - display settings
An easy-to-use display settings screen lets you choose what content users want displayed and for how long. It is also possible to display user-providedJPG file
Control device via software
DSPEC 50 can be controlled by a computer and supports a variety of ORTEC application software, such as MAESTRO, MAESTRO-Pro, and GammaVision, as well as the CONNECTIONS Programmer’s Toolkit development package. Advanced models can use the built-in web server for advanced control without the need to install any additional software. Standard models (DSPEC-50/502) include a suite of single-user MAESTRO software for setup and data acquisition. Advanced models (DSPEC-50A/502A) include a single-user MAESTRO-pro software with additional features, including support for all features of the new instrument.
