The ORTEC Submersible Radiation Detector (SPD-1) is designed for scanning nuclear fuel elements in spent fuel pools. The SPD-1 is suitable for other waterproof radiation detector applications that require waterproofing and are suitable for shallow water. In fuel element scanning applications, high-resolution spectral measurements are required, which means using high-purity germanium (HPGe) radiation detectors. Like all germanium radiation detectors, it requires liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling. Special compact LN2 dewars (thermos) provide 20 liters of LN2 during operation. The Dewar can be refilled at the surface of the pool without removing the waterproof cover. The SPD-1 has an operating time of approximately 12 to 14 days before needing to be refilled with LN2. The LN2 low level alarm and high voltage (H.V.) inhibit circuit monitor and protect the system.
The compact (approximately 37 inches long, 12 inches diameter) stainless steel shroud protects the HPGe detector element, cryogenic assembly, 20-liter LN2 dewar, LN2 level probe, preamplifier, high-voltage filter, and lead shield. An open lead shield is placed behind the detector element to shield the pool from contaminated water and also provides resistance to buoyancy for the system. There are three lifting eyes on the stainless steel housing, and the housing is easy to clean or decontaminate. The specific system shown is designed for pool depths up to 30 feet. Polyvinyl chloride pipe is used to house the cables for the detector assembly and to drain the LN2 to the pool surface. A thin (30 mil) side window in the stainless steel shroud allows low-energy photons (as low as 50 keV) to enter the detector assembly.
