Explosion-proof radiation measuring instrument builds a set of "early warning-positioning-assessment" chain

At petrochemical, nuclear industry emergency or natural gas processing sites, workers often face dual threats: invisible ionizing radiation and gases that may explode at any time. Ordinary radiation detection equipment may cause disasters due to circuit sparks or case friction in such scenarios. For this reason, a specially designed equipment came into being - an explosion-proof radiation measuring instrument. Its core value lies in integrating the two functions of "radiation detection" and "detonation suppression" into the same closed structure.

Explosion-proof radiation measuring instrumentThe physical structure follows the dual principles of explosion-proof and intrinsic safety. Its shell is made of high-strength aluminum alloy or special stainless steel, and the seams are precision ground and filled with flame-retardant sealant, which can withstand internal explosions without deformation and prevent flames from spreading to the external environment. The internal circuit is designed with current limiting and voltage limiting to ensure that the spark energy generated under any working conditions is lower than the ignition threshold of flammable gas. The detector part usually uses semiconductor crystals, which are covered with an impact-resistant buffer layer. Even under severe vibration, high-temperature particles will not be generated due to crystal fragmentation.

Its function is not a single measurement, but to build a set of "early warning-positioning-assessment" chain. Usually, it can continuously monitor changes in gamma ray or neutron flux before the explosive gas concentration reaches dangerous values. For example, during pipeline maintenance in a refinery, if the radioactive scale (such as radium-226) deposited on the inner wall of the pipeline is accidentally exposed, the equipment will immediately send out an audible and visual alarm, but the alarm trigger circuit itself will not produce any open flames. In addition, the equipment is equipped with a directional probe, which can assist personnel to quickly locate the source of radiation leakage and shorten the stay time in the dangerous area. In addition, its built-in data storage module can record continuous dose rate curves for subsequent analysis of the accident evolution process and provide a basis for process improvement.

It is worth noting that this equipment does not replace conventional radiation protection measures, but supplements the special dimension of "explosive environments". For example, on offshore drilling platforms, salt spray corrosion and oil and gas volatilization coexist. The explosion-proof performance of ordinary instrument shells may be reduced due to corrosion. However, the shells of such equipment have been certified by salt spray tests and are equipped with anti-static grounding terminals to ensure timely discharge of charges. During the decommissioning operations of nuclear facilities, operators carry it into a restricted space containing hydrogen. The device readings can assist in determining whether forced ventilation needs to be activated, thereby avoiding delays in disposal due to radiation monitoring blind spots.

From a usage perspective, operators need to regularly calibrate detection efficiency and check whether oil stains or scratches are attached to the explosion-proof surface. Any unauthorized disassembly will destroy the integrity of explosion protection, so routine maintenance is usually performed by professional agencies. The device battery uses a special explosion-proof lithium battery pack, and the charging process usually needs to be completed in a safe area. These details determine whether it can respond reliably at critical moments.

The applicable fields of explosion-proof radiation measuring instruments cover many aspects from uranium mining to medical radiation sterilization. In coal mines, it can be used to detect associated radioactive minerals; in airport cargo security, it helps detect illegal packages containing radioactive materials while avoiding dangers caused by gasoline vapor in the security area. Its design logic always revolves around a contradiction: it must sensitively capture weak radiation signals, but it must also suppress itself from becoming an ignition source. This balance is achieved through redundant isolation circuits and multiple layers of protective materials, rather than relying on a single technical means.

To clarify, this device does not provide protection, it does not block radiation or reduce environmental doses. Its value lies in providing a basis for decision-making - when to evacuate, where to isolate, and what level of protection is appropriate. When there are both flammable gas and radiation risks on site, operators can formulate a phased disposal plan based on their readings and combined with gas detector data. This collaborative working model enables risk assessment in complex environments to shift from “guessing” to “quantification”.

Explosion-proof radiation measuring instrumentThe maintenance cost is higher than that of ordinary equipment, but its return in accident prevention is difficult to measure in monetary terms. For example, an unplanned downtime caused by a misjudgment may cause losses that far exceed the price of the equipment. Therefore, purchasers need to comprehensively consider sensor life, protection level certification (such as ATEX or IECEx) and after-sales calibration cycles.
