To avoid recoil contamination, the momentum of the positively charged recoil nuclei can be reduced by increasing the vacuum chamber pressure and applying a negative bias to the sample holder to suppress ions from the detector. This has almost no effect on energy resolution.
In instruments equipped with RCAP-2, all sample holders are negatively biased at -12 volts.
RCAP-2 can control pressure in the range of 10-3 Torr to one atmosphere. Pressure control components include:
- Solenoid valves for on/off control, Granville-Philips® Convectron flow tubes for pressure measurement and valves for high-pressure pump throttling, all mounted on a brass manifold.
- Granville-Philips vacuum controller with digital readout for pressure and set point. Please note that pressures below 1 Torr in the vacuum chamber can be displayed on the front panel digital display.
- Eight biased sample trays.
