Advantages of IDM-200-P
The HPGe detector's modular design and excellent energy resolution provide integrators with significant advantages. The IDM-200-P integrates this performance into a highly reliable and convenient package design.
Integrated solutions The IDM-200-P can be easily adapted to other screening technologies such as NII X-ray, EDS and radiation portal monitors.
COTS IDM-200-P is a commercial off-the-shelf solution that reduces costs, is more flexible for many applications, and shortens the design-to-market cycle.
Close to X-ray machine Field tests have proven that the impact of scattered X-rays on the background of the IDM-200-P HPGe detector has little impact on its ability to identify radionuclides.
Detector energy resolution The germanium detector has the highest resolution of any commercial gamma ray detector. High resolution is advantageous in applications, allowing increased sensitivity and more accurate identification of radionuclides at all energies.
Detector SNM sensitivity The IDM-200-P has the sensitivity to detect and identify Special Nuclear Materials (SNM). Due to the excellent signal-to-noise ratio, very little signal is required to achieve very high detection confidence, making the system extremely sensitive compared to low-to-medium resolution systems.
Recognition ability Combined with optional advanced identification algorithms in ORTEC Detective Series software, the IDM-200-P solution can unambiguously identify threat nuclides in standard packages and cargo. The system is able to accurately detect and identify small gamma ray peaks. The high resolution also means that other bands of spectra can be more easily seen, and these can be confirmed by the ORTEC software algorithm's presence (or absence) of specific nuclides.
The technology behind ORTEC IDM-200-P
ORTEC has successfully developed, tested and configured products for safety-critical applications requiring detection and identification of radiological and nuclear threats.
ORTEC's pioneering advances in HPGe technology have greatly expanded the scope of existing HPGe safety applications.
Leveraging ORTEC's long history of manufacturing equipment, the Detective Series and IDM products have become the standard for verifying the presence of special nuclear materials (legal and illegal) and can meet the demanding requirements for detecting and identifying special nuclear materials.
HPGe represents an advanced radiation sensor technology that can detect, identify and analyze materials typically missed by other nuclear detection systems. The HPGe detection system is largely unaffected by changes in the radiation background or ambient temperature changes. They are less susceptible to electrical interference than other systems and are able to detect radioactive sources behind thicker shielding than other systems.
application software
ORTEC has an extensive software portfolio designed to meet the needs of homeland security applications. Software is a key element in determining the performance of nuclear safety measurement systems. Application software is often thought of as the tool that turns "hardware into a solution." ORTEC has software for most nuclear measurement applications, often with integrated hardware control, display and analysis capabilities in a single software package.

machinery
To support OEMs, ORTEC has leveraged its experience in manufacturing Detective portable instruments to develop new detector modules and integrated solutions to meet operational needs in the environment.
The IDM-200-P is specifically designed for use with HPGe portal monitors and other similar nuclear materials. These hardware subsystems are designed for demanding applications. All components are derived from ORTEC technology, which has been proven with hundreds of Detective portable identifiers in the field.
IDM-200-P is a compact detection instrument subsystem. The IDM-200-P can be conveniently mounted on a rack inside the cabinet. Multiple IDM-200-P subsystems can be stacked vertically for entrance and exit applications. The IDM-200-P is narrow enough to fit in a standard 19-inch rack. Integrated handle makes installation and portability easy.
The low-power IDM-200-P reduces thermal requirements. When cooled to operating temperature, the IDM-200-P consumes <100 watts. Low power consumption means systems configured with the IDM-200-P do not require advanced rack air conditioning systems.
The HPGe detector's shield is on the back of the cryostat. Additional shielding can be placed on the sides of the detector end caps to limit the horizontal field of view. The vertical field of view can also be defined by shielding. (Maintenance and replacement are easy by designing the shield/collimation to be self-contained.)
Germanium Detector
Most gamma-ray emissions from special nuclear materials (SNM) are below 1 MeV. Extensive modeling shows that a detector size of 85 mm diameter and 30 mm deep is the geometry to detect these gamma rays. The nominal geometry of the HPGe crystal is the same in all IDM-200-P subsystems.
ORTEC is a leader in the development and application of mechanically cooled HPGe detector technology, launching mechanically cooled HPGe detectors more than 20 years ago. There are more HPGe spectrometers worldwide cooled by mechanical cooling systems supplied by ORTEC than all other commercial and non-commercial systems combined. In particular, the Stirling cycle cooler technology employed by the Detective and IDM-200-P has been proven in practice as hundreds of ORTEC Detective HPGe portable handheld identifiers have recently been used in the field.
The design of the IDM-200-P cryostat is derived from the Detective handheld identifier, which itself is an unconventional design that does not use molecular sieves as a cryogenic pump. Instead, it uses an all-metal seal and a very clean construction method. The all-metal construction makes the cryostat rugged and long-lasting, allowing it to be cycled indefinitely with full or partial regeneration. The cooler can be turned off and on again at any time to facilitate service operations.
DSP electronic equipment
The digital signal processing (DSP) electronics subsystem used in the IDM-200-P is derived from the ORTEC Detective series systems. The low-power design is stable against changes in count rate and temperature, which is useful in many applications.
Field operation of all instruments differs from laboratory operation. Mechanical vibration or acoustic noise can cause performance degradation in on-site operating systems. The high energy resolution of HPGe detectors may be degraded by mechanical vibration or microphonic noise. ORTEC's LFR1 technology solves common vibration issues in aerial survey and access monitoring systems. Another source of low-frequency electrical noise is electrical ground loops - common in field systems. The LFR filter feature reduces the impact of all such noise sources.
Data can be collected in histogram mode (the traditional mode for pulse height analysis) and then transferred to a PC for further analysis. There is a short dead time when transferring data without collecting new data. List mode data collection can be used when data cannot be missed. List patterns have been used with great success in many practical situations. For example, when the sample is moved relative to the detector, it is necessary to measure the activity curve as a function of time or position. Another application is aerial and land surveying. There are no "dead periods" in data collection. When moving at 50 km/h, a 100 millisecond interval in the data collection means a gap of close to 1.5 meters in the data collection curve. In list operation mode, data is stored directly into memory by event, with timestamp (200 nanoseconds). This rich data can then be reconstructed into individual spectra by time, energy or location within the portal. This feature of the IDM-200-P greatly enhances the system's detection sensitivity in all applications.

Plug-and-play high-speed USB 2.0 communication makes subsystem control and data acquisition fast and easy.
