ORTEC's IDM-200-V Interchangeable Detector Module is a high-performance gamma-ray spectroscopy "building block" that can be used in a variety of applications. It is a self-contained module that is rugged and low-power and includes a large-area mechanically cooled high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector in standard crystal size and all necessary spectrum measurement electronics.
The IDM-200-V has everything you need for high-resolution spectroscopy tasks, storing the resulting spectra in memory or sending the digitized pulse stream in list mode format to a connected PC for further analysis.
The IDM-200-V is compatible with ORTEC software applications such as MAESTRO, GammaVision and ISO-Plus, and can also be controlled from third-party developed software using the optional ORTEC software toolkit.
These attributes make the IDM-200-V a solution for a wide range of measurements and applications that meet the requirements for spectral performance, reliability and convenience. It is ideally suited for OEM applications as a component within larger measurement systems, such as:
- waste analysis
- homeland security
- Continuous air particle monitoring
- bioanalysis
- Industrial process monitoring
- aerial survey
The IDM-200-V instrument provides long-term reliable service and is interchangeable with another instrument of the same model. The IDM-200-V is lightweight enough to be installed by one person. ORTEC CONNECTIONS Programmer's Toolkit is available to support system integrators.
machinery
The IDM-200-V is designed for integrated measurement systems requiring HPGe spectroscopy. All components are derived from ORTEC technology, which has been proven with hundreds of Detective portable identifiers in the field.
IDM-200-V is a compact detection instrument subsystem. During operation, running the entire system on DC or AC via the (included) converter requires (only) about 30 watts of power. Minimal waste heat reduces installation considerations. Low power consumption means systems configured with the IDM-200-V do not require advanced rack air conditioning systems.
Custom collimators can be used to limit the forward field of view. Standard instrumentation also includes a steel collimator flush with the detector end cap.
To facilitate the installation of the IDM-200-V, six blind holes are provided on the housing.
Digital signal processing electronic equipment
The digital signal processing (DSP) electronics subsystem used in the IDM-200-V is derived from the ORTEC DSPEC and Detective series systems. The low-power design provides stability against changes in count rate and temperature, which is important to system integrators in many applications.
The operation of integrated measurement systems is more challenging than laboratory operations. Complex non-laboratory environments (such as mechanical vibration or acoustic noise) can cause system performance to degrade. The energy resolution of HPGe detectors may be degraded by mechanical vibration or microphonic noise. But the special "low frequency"
The "Noise Suppression" feature greatly reduces the likelihood of this occurring in noisy non-laboratory environments.
Germanium Detector
The ~50% relative efficiency HPGe detector in the IDM-200-V has a "super square" diameter-length profile. Large diameter improves low energy efficiency. The graph below compares the point source efficiency curve of the IDM-200-V to a more conventional profile detector with nearly the same relative efficiency (51%). The IDM-200-V shows higher efficiency in the low to medium energy range, where container or matrix absorption effects may affect measurements.
Radiation Entrance Window: Excellent transmission is achieved at incident gamma ray energies of 60keV and above.
cryogenic cooler
For over 20 years, ORTEC has been at the forefront of the development and application of mechanically cooled HPGe detectors.
The design of the IDM-200-V cryostat is derived from the Detective handheld identifier, which itself is an unconventional design that does not use molecular sieves as a cryogenic pump. Instead, it uses an all-metal seal and extremely clean construction. The all-metal sealed construction makes the cryostat rugged and long-lasting, allowing it to be cycled indefinitely for full or partial reheating. The cooler can be switched off and on again at any time without risk, allowing for easy maintenance operations.
IDM-200-V data acquisition mode
Data is typically collected by the IDM-200-V in Pulse Height Analysis (PHA) mode and then transferred to a PC for further analysis. There is a short dead time when transferring data without collecting new data. If you cannot lose data, you can use list mode collection. In list operating mode, data is stored by event directly into computer memory with a timestamp (200 nanoseconds). These data can then be reconstructed into individual spectra by time, energy, or location. This feature of the IDM-200-V greatly enhances the system's detection sensitivity in many applications.
Communication
Plug-and-play high-speed USB 2.0 communication makes module control and data acquisition fast and easy.
service
The IDM-200-V can be quickly and directly replaced. Only two interfaces are required, line power and USB.
