Detection and quantification of radioactive material in the body are key factors for determining contamination and dose assessment to those inside. These measurements can be made using laboratory instruments to measure samples of body fluids or directly on people. Unless there is a need to measure nuclides that do not emit gamma rays, body fluid measurements are generally not considered due to biohazards and lack of immediate results. Methods that directly measure gamma-ray emitting radioactive materials in the body provide rapid results, can also determine where the material is likely to be located in the body, and do not require additional pharmaceuticals for detection through body fluids.
ORTEC offers direct person measurement systems that use NaI and HPGe detectors for rapid screening or routine examinations, with fixed or mobile detection configurations where subjects can be measured in a standing, seated or lying position. All of these systems use ORTEC's Renaissance software application for simple system setup and operation
