- Its simplicity and ease of use in screening radioactively contaminated food has now been further enhanced.
- Suitable for counting various sample types.
- Comply with regulatory detection limit requirements:
- Results are calculated, such as Permissible Percent Concentration (MPC).
- Immediate feedback via an audible alarm to warn of sample activity exceeding user-set percentage of MPC limit.
- Available "ready out of the box" and includes standard sample containers. Comes with inspection sample.
- Intuitive software for data collection, display and storage.
- Convenient and easy-to-install cart option.
Hardware features
- Get efficient counting and simple sample loading with a 3" x 3" NaI detector in a benchtop low background lead shield, optionally mounted on an easy-to-operate wheeled cart.
- Connecting the ORTECdigiBASE integrated digital preamplifier, detector high voltage power supply and state-of-the-art digital signal processing multi-channel analyzer via USB makes installation even easier.
- Digital spectrum stabilization, resistant to temperature changes.
The ORTEC FoodGuard-1 food monitoring system can quickly and accurately screen foods for radionuclides caused by nuclear power plant release events: such as 131I, 103Ru, 134Cs and 137Cs. Total cesium (sum of 134Cs and 137Cs activities) can also be reported. The system is battery-powered, portable and has low power consumption, so it can be used in places such as food collection, import, sale or consumption. It is easy to carry and the optional cart makes the system easy to use in places such as food markets for convenient inspection of food products.
The FoodGuard-1 system hardware includes a (NaI(Tl)) gamma detector in a lead shield, an ORTEC digiBASE integrated spectrometer, a laptop computer, and a laser printer. digiBASE provides multi-channel analyzer functionality, high-voltage power supply for the NaI detector and all signal processing electronics. Internally stabilized electronics and internal inspection sources allow the system to be used in a wide range of environmental conditions.
Working principle
Place sample material in the Marinelli beaker (included). The beaker is then placed over the detector in the shield. The operator starts the measurement process using FoodGuard software and is guided through a series of operations. The software will collect the data, analyze the spectrum, check the results against allowed limits and print a report. Spectra and reports are also saved on the laptop's hard drive. Samples exceeding defined limits are clearly marked in the report for quick retrieval.
Spectral analysis uses the "interference ROI matrix" method, which is approved by the US FDA for food monitoring.
Matrix operations are based on numerical methods.
Calibration
The system comes pre-calibrated for gain and efficiency at the factory. Fixed efficiency calibration is determined by the size of the detector crystal and the sample container used. Gain calibration is adjustable and, once set, prevents temperature drift. The system comes with standard 1 liter Marinelli cup containers, the use of which ensures accurate results from the factory calibration. The naturally occurring isotope 40K is also included in the report and can be used to monitor system performance as well as provide a reference peak for stable gain.
FoodGuard-2 HPGe system reduces MDC and increases customization capabilities
FoodGuard-1 is designed to rapidly analyze radionuclides seen in nuclear power plant incidents. For lower MDC, more advanced reporting and customizable nuclide libraries, ORTEC developed the FoodGuard-2 high-resolution germanium system.
