The charge in the photomultiplier output pulse is integrated across the input capacitance of the preamplifier to produce a voltage pulse. A non-inverting voltage amplifier (gain ≈ 1) drives this pulse into the output load. A switch that selects the input level controls the preamplifier's sensitivity. The input capacitance of the Model 113 is approximately 45 pF plus the capacitance selected by the front panel switch (0, 100, 200, 500, or 1000 pF).
The 113 should be used with a main amplifier such as ORTEC's 460, 570 Series, 671, 672 and 590A Series.
The diode network prevents damage to the input transistor if a high positive or negative voltage is suddenly applied to the input.
