8-channel rapid analysis to screen multiple gamma-ray emitting radionuclides in clinical samples
- A very compact solution to quickly screen hundreds of samples per day for possible radioactive contamination.
- No sample processing required: pass/fail assessment based on analytical limits.
- 700 samples can be counted in 20 hours of operation.
- MDA (LOD) = 52 Bq/L, 300 seconds count.
- Automatic data entry via barcode scanning (optional), counting 8 samples (10ml or 50ml) simultaneously.
- 8 independent NaI(Tl) well detectors and counting chains.
- Digitally stable electronic devices.
- Complete spectral data are retained for detailed analysis.
The world after 9-11 is very different from previous nuclear ages. People today are more likely to be exposed to unexpected large amounts of radiation due to the radiation leaks that could result from an attack by a radioactive dispersion device, or RDD. Following a breach or release of radioactive material into the environment, internal body examinations may be required or requested by a large number of personnel. Failure to respond quickly may increase public fear. Even if the radiation risk is small, rapid screening of large numbers of subjects may be necessary to reduce public fear.
The ORTEC GAMMASCREEN-8 multi-sample screening system is a simple tool for completing preliminary screening operations. GAMMASCREEN-8 is also a turnkey system based on ORTEC digital signal processing spectrum technology.
Eight (NaI(Tl)) "well" detectors (each with a separate digiBASE integrated digital spectrometer-photomultiplier tube holder) are placed within a common and compact lead shield, in a layout that minimizes sample crosstalk.
Small vials can be counted in the well, or a 50ml vial can be placed on top of the detector.
Sample screening software applications manage the system, ensuring reliable and simple operation. Setup is simple; a single parameter entry screen sets bias settings, stabilization and threshold limits for 8 detectors as well as common acquisition preset parameters for sample batches to be screened.
An optional barcode reader is available to simplify sample ID data entry.
During a screening operation, the system compares the total sample count rate to a threshold value, giving easy-to-understand pass-fail criteria.
MAESTRO® MCA software can be used to examine detailed spectra of suspect samples; it can display 8 complete spectra simultaneously and display real-time spectra during counting.
"Failed" samples can be further analyzed using the HPGe spectrometer, or samples can be counted in situ for longer periods of time using the optional A66SV-BW GammaVision software for further nuclide ID and quantification.
The ORTEC GAMMASCREEN-8 multi-sample screening system is available as a customized solution for individual needs.
