Detailed introduction

USARSD RS-800T Heart and Chest Phantom

Overview

Assess patients for detectability, extent, and severity of myocardial infarction.

RSD's heart and chest phantoms are designed to provide patient testing and validation of different reconstruction strategies, imaging protocols, and image registration techniques. It also provides an effective assessment of mammographic techniques.

heart: A precise anatomical heart model is based on a vacuum-formed shell. It is designed using high-resolution, enhanced, ultra-fastCT data, slightly modified to facilitate its use. The left and right ventricles are connected at the atrial region to form a single ventricle that can be filled and flushed independently using two ports labeled HC (ventricular). The right ventricle changes slightly, allowing air to escape during filling. The myocardial wall (MW) has two ports, flushing and independent filling. The ventricular volume is 284 ml, the myocardial wall volume is 238 ml, and there is no insertion defect. The standard model includes three defects with volumes of 8.9, 13.5 and 41.7 ml. Each defect can be filled individually. Defects of different sizes can be ordered free of charge. A disassembled heart was requested to be sent so that a special collection could be built to size. Please note that different defects cannot be retrofitted in the assembled heart.

basic chest: The chest cavity is made of polyurethane, improved to tissue equivalence, and the mass density is1.10 g/cc. The narrow beam linear attenuation coefficient measured at 140 keV (Tc-99m) is 0.160 cm-1. When all organs (heart, lungs and liver) are inserted, the volume of the chest cavity is approximately 8200 ml. It is filled from the top with an inert or radioactive solution to simulate a chest background. A valve is installed at the bottom to allow easy drainage of the phantom. Residues on the cavity walls can be easily flushed using the accessories provided on the top of the phantom. A second, smaller accessory is also provided as an air vent during inflation.

Lungs: The perfusable lung is molded in a hollow, vacuum-formed shell filled with polystyrene foam beads. Add inert or radioactive solution through the filling port on the top of each lung shell, with a final mass density of0.40 g/cc. Extra lungs can also provide work continuity. The volumes of the left and right lung shells are 907 ml and 1,134 ml respectively.

liver: includes a volume of980 ml of liver to evaluate the effect of its uptake on quantitative myocardial imaging. It is a vacuum formed enclosure mounted on acrylic tubing to minimize artifacts. The liver can be filled with inert or radioactive solutions.

Fillable external mark: Supplied with a set of refillable capsules as exterior markers. Capsules can be filled with a radioactive solution and attached to the phantom's outer surface. It can then be imaged usingSPECT or PET mode to compare image registration techniques.

Thoracic Coverage, Removable Breasts, and Breast Tumors: The chest phantom without coverage simulates an average male patient. Overlays, with or without breasts, simulate a larger female or a larger male patient, respectively. This makes it possible to evaluate the impact of additional attenuation and scattering on quantitative myocardial imaging. The volume of each vacuum-formed breast is972ml. A tumor filled with radioactive solution can be inserted to evaluate planar and tomographic imaging techniques used in mammography. Includes a group of breast tumors (3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 mm in diameter). They are supported by thin threaded nylon rods that pass through the ports and are sealed by o-rings. They can be bent by hand to any part of the breast.
