—Tissue equivalence of proton and photon therapy

The CIRS 731-HN head phantom is an anthropomorphic head phantom designed for commissioning and treatment planning system (TPS) validation with any conformal or IMRT proton therapy system1.

The motif is equivalent toCIRS tissue is composed of materials that mimic reference tissue within 1.5% for protons from 1.5 KeV to 15 MeV and 1% for photons. The proton therapy head can be used in all standard IMRT procedures from CT image acquisition to verification of proton beam delivery1,3.

The detailed tissue equivalence of the internal structures makes this phantom ideal for evaluating treatment plans in locations with high density gradients, which is particularly important in proton therapy, such as stoma and bone structures. Internal structures include the brain, bones with cortical and trabecular distinctions, larynx, trachea, fully open sinus cavities, nasal cavity, and oral cavity, and teeth with distinct dentine, enamel, and root structures.

The Model 731-HN approximates the average male head in size and structure, allowing for intuitive setup using any patient positioning or immobilization device.

Starting from the approximate center of the sagittal plane, place half of the phantom at three film positions in the craniocaudal direction.Section in 2 cm increments. Because the slices are orthogonal to the CT axial plane, artifacts caused by residual air gaps are significantly reduced compared to standard axial slices.

By adding tungstenThe BB was placed in the molar and the titanium prosthesis was fixed to the C3 and C5 vertebrae with two screws to enhance the commissioning of the proton system.
