CT performance phantoms and CT dose phantoms: what to check

2026-10-29

Separate the measurement objectives before checking modules, instruments and accessories. This overview uses the retained Catphan, CTP700 and KR101 entries to support configuration discussions.

Separate the measurement objectives

CT performance phantoms and CT dose phantoms may appear in the same purchasing request, but their documentation and configuration checks differ. Performance phantoms address imaging evaluation; dose phantom selection also involves the relevant dosimetry equipment. List the imaging tests and dose measurement tasks separately.

A water module for an imaging test should not be treated as a CT dose phantom solely because its name includes water.

Match tests to performance modules

The existing CTP700 documentation lists tests by module: CTP682 includes sensitometry and slice geometry, CTP714 addresses high resolution, CTP515 addresses low contrast, and CTP712 addresses spatial uniformity and noise. Check each test, module and accessory individually.

Catphan 500 and Catphan 500+plus have separate entries. The existing 500+plus entry also describes a real-water module. Similar series names do not establish identical configurations, and historical documentation is not a current delivery list.

Check the dose measurement setup

The existing KR101 CT dose phantom entry describes head and body phantoms, holes, plugs and an adapter. Specify the existing measuring instrument, detector dimensions and required accessories so interfaces can be checked.

  • Confirm the required head/body combination and dimensions.
  • Check hole layout, diameters, plugs and chamber adapters.
  • Confirm whether the delivery includes only the phantom or also detectors and a readout instrument.
  • Use the applicable formal test documents and instrument instructions for methods and evaluation.

This overview does not provide scanning procedures, clinical dose recommendations or pass/fail thresholds.

Build a configuration checklist

List the scanner model, imaging tests, dose measurement tasks, existing phantom and accessories. For additions to an existing system, include module names or documentation before confirming the version.

Can a performance phantom directly complete a dose measurement?

Check the actual purpose and configuration of both the phantom and measuring system. The general term CT phantom cannot establish this.

Why review each model separately?

Modules, test objects and accessories may differ. Start with the CT detection tools and compare the retained model documentation against each task.

Discuss a configuration

Provide the equipment model, measurement task and required accessories so the corresponding documentation can be checked.
